Melania wore white today for St. Patrick’s Day services, but her husband was not in a peaceful mood. He came out swinging today against the shade of John McCain. Already peeved by a rerun of Saturday Night Live that portrayed him with disapprobation, Trump unloaded on his longtime nemesis in no uncertain terms. McCain may have died in August 2018, but to Trump his example apparently remains a living rebuke. So he had to disparage him. McCain’s marks at the Naval Academy were so lousy that he was ‘last in his class,’ according to Trump on — what else? — Twitter. For what it’s worth, the former war hero and longtime senator and presidential candidate was fifth from the bottom — as he himself would jokingly point out.
Trump thought he was bringing up the heavy artillery. In fact, he was only shooting BBs. After all, as the Washington Post recently reported, Trump had his janissaries go to some to lengths to quash his high school records. Once again, a Trump attack is a mere projection of his own neuroses and anxieties. All along he seems to be haunted by the fear that he, who called 1970s New York his ‘sexual Vietnam,’ will end up being compared and contrasted with McCain, who saw actual combat and was a figure of the utmost valor and patriotism, something that is most unlikely to ever be said about a rogue male like Trump.
Trump has also been venting about McCain’s role in disseminating the Steele dossier — which, incidentally, has been more right than wrong — calling it a ‘stain’ on his record and claiming that he sent it to the FBI to try and stymie his election. This piffle is contradicted by the fact that McCain only contacted the FBI in January.
Where are the Republican senators? Mostly AWOL. The most that Lindsey Graham could rouse himself to state was that ‘As to @SenJohnMcCain and his devotion to his country: He stepped forward to risk his life for his country, served honorably under difficult circumstances, and was one of the most consequential senators in the history of the body. Nothing about his service will ever be changed or diminished.’
Graham and others only diminish themselves when they quake in the presence of Trump’s flapdoodle, much of which he likes to spew out on weekends, presumably when he has even more times on his hands than during the regular week. Meghan McCain had it right: ‘No one will ever love you the way they loved my father,’ she tweeted Saturday. ‘I wish I had been given more Saturday’s with him. Maybe spend yours with your family instead of on twitter obsessing over mine?’ Can’t Ivanka or Jared, not to mention Melania, spare a moment to distract him?
