A liberal elite is slurring her words (and Cockburn doesn’t mean in the fun, tipsy way).
Kasey Funderburg was a sideline reporter for the University of Tennessee. According to Outkick.com, she was fired last week after someone scrolled and scrolled (and scrolled and scrolled and scrolled…) and found some tweets Funderburg, now twenty-six, wrote in 2013 containing the N-word.
The whole thing started when a Twitter user encouraged Tennessee fans to wear blackface to a game. Funderburg wrote, “THIS IS A FAKE ACCOUNT and it’s disgusting that this person thinks putting out a joke like this is okay. Please don’t believe everything you read on Twitter.” Nonetheless, Funderburg’s teenage tweets were too much, and the New York Post reports the reporter’s “bio page has been deleted from the Vols’ official website.”
Meanwhile, in Virginia, Karen Keys-Gamarra remains an at-large representative on the Fairfax County School Board and a Virginia Supreme Court guardian ad litem after repeatedly using an ableist slur. Keys-Gamarra, “an experienced child advocate and attorney who represents children from diverse backgrounds,” was caught on a hot mic saying, “We cannot be this retarded.”
School board chairwoman Rachna Sizemore Heizer told WUSA9 this is at least the third time Keys-Garmarra has used the offensive term. Heizer said that Keys-Gamarra “did apologize and say she wouldn’t use it again. So, I would say I was really taken aback and stunned when I learned she used it again.”
Parents have expressed outrage that Keys-Garmarra is still on the board. A change.org petition is demanding Keys-Gamarra’s resignation. Yet in a letter, the Fairfax County School District simply said the R-word is “unacceptable” and apologized “for the hurt and offense this incident has caused in our community.” The district said Keys-Garmarra apologized for using the slur and the district would be meeting with her to discuss the matter further.
Keys-Garmarra’s bio has not been removed from the Fairfax County Public School website, where under her “board goals and priorities” is listed “improving special education services and inclusion practices” (ha!).
Funderburg, on the other hand, made poor choices as a child and is, apparently, not worthy of forgiveness, despite actually attempting to prevent a racial offense from occurring.
Silence from @fcpsnews + 11 board members as @Keys_Gamarra admits she called people "retarded." Full statement here. She says judge her by her "body of work." Mom @d_tisler says: "…entire body of work? Restraint? Seclusion?.." Parents want her to resign. https://t.co/zqJrkFiKrr
