Since George Floyd’s death in May 2020, the media has had almost a singular focus on portraying the American justice system as institutionally racist. The political left and their big-name donors have worked to install social progressives as attorneys general and prosecutors and have worked on bail reform to minimize criminal offenses, largely by African Americans. Racial conflict has driven much of the political and media conversation, leading to the widespread concept of DEI in boardrooms and newsrooms — and the Democratic Party employing a vague concept of racial “equity” in place of equality.
Yet suddenly all of that has gone out the window when it comes to Hunter Biden, the affluent and powerful white son of the sitting president of the United States. Hunter has agreed something of a sweetheart plea deal on several charges relating to income tax evasion and lying on a federal firearm background check. Hunter not only lied on a federal background check form when he purchased said firearm; his then partner Hallie Biden, his brother’s widow, discarded the gun in a trashcan near a school. When Hunter was questioned about the incident, he pointed his finger at Hispanic males who had been seen in the area, and was quoted in the police report as saying, “Probably illegal.” Classy!
After a five-year ongoing investigation, Biden will serve no jail time for these offenses in return for a guilty plea, despite a very clear conflict of interest as he agrees to a deal with his own father’s Department of Justice. But the media at large does not want to address race disparity when it comes to Hunter Biden. His is a clear-cut example of the kind of white privilege that has motivated hundreds of thinkpieces on race in the previous three years — and now they don’t want to touch it?!
When Robert Draper of the New York Times appeared on CNN this past Sunday, he referenced the prosecution of Donald Trump. “Their point of view is that they’re politically persecuted, that there’s a two-tiered system of justice… not well-off whites versus people of color, it’s the ruling class versus Trump supporters.” Draper did not address the son of the president’s plea deal, as opposed to say, poor African Americans who have been charged with similar drug and firearm crimes.
The attorney for hip hop artist Kodak Black has spoken out on behalf of his client, who was given a three-year prison sentence for similar offenses in 2019 relating to lying on a federal background check. Black falsified information on federal paperwork to purchase at least four guns.
Attorney General Merrick Garland took to the podium last week to defend the deal made between Hunter Biden and his Department of Justice. “Some have chosen to attack the integrity of the Justice Department by claiming that we do not treat cases alike. This constitutes an attack on an institution that is essential to American democracy… Nothing could be further from the truth.” Garland is not only arguing that a statistical fact is somehow an Attack on American Democracy, but that the “racial disparities” in the American justice system, that the Biden administration have been pushing for years, with the media echoing, do not exist. If all cases are treated equally under the law, then poor Americans of color would have received the same plea deal as the rich white son of the sitting president. Would anyone in the media like to investigate whether that’s the case? I’ll wait…
