“Whitney Cummings, it is time for you to roast the year,” Andy Cohen said Tuesday night, an invitation he would perhaps go on to regret. Cohen and Anderson Cooper let Cummings loose on 2024 as part of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage. Cummings quickly breezed through a laundry list of controversial and touchy jokes in four or so minutes on live TV.
She addressed “our” wistful obsession with murderers (the Menendez brothers, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Luigi Mangione), the increased sale of baby oil, Hunter Biden’s laptop, white supremacy in relation to Ariana Grande, cryptocurrency as “astrology for men” and the drones in New Jersey that the government surely knows about…“I mean they’re still up in the sky so I guess we can rule out that they were made by Boeing.”
Two of Cummings’s most eye-catching lines from the night: “The Democrats couldn’t hold a primary because they were too busy holding a body upright” and “Kamala was forced on us so hard you’d think she was patented by Pfizer.”
But Cockburn’s favorite was: “I do believe we need to hold 2024 accountable for its behavior. That is what white women do now; we point out other people that are toxic cause we don’t get ironies, and that is our truth.”
What Cockburn found most intriguing about Whitney’s bit was not the Biden and Kamala roasts but Cummings, Cooper’s and Cohen’s reactions — and not just because of that nice alliteration.
“I can’t believe you guys are still letting me go, this is amazing. I love CNN.” Cummings said at the end, obviously shocked to have not been cut off.
After her Biden bit about Democrats being too busy holding a body upright, she trailed off and looked to Cohen and Cooper. Cohen appeared comically shocked and then smiled with panic in his eyes. Cooper strategically turned his face away from the camera for the whole routine, with his clear umbrella covering his face for good measure.
“Are we still rolling? Am I off?” Cummings said as Cohen smiled with stress in his eyes and said, “Go for it!”
Cummings continued:“It was amazing that the pro-choice party didn’t give their voters one when it came to the presidential candidate.” And after the Pfizer-Kamala dig Cummings cut herself off and looked over at Cooper. “Andy just gave me a very scary look.” Cohen: “No!”
Cummings ended with a quick and scared “super long list of things the mainstream media won’t cover” and continues to add to the list via her Twitter account, with a couple more, “Am I still streaming? This is amazing!” sprinkled throughout.
With the sharp decline in CNN veiwership since the election, perhaps Cohen won’t regret letting Cummings go for so long after all.
