Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has received notice he is a target in the federal criminal investigation into the January 6 riot and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
Two sources with direct knowledge of the grand jury probe confirmed to NBC News that Smith had sent Trump the target letter.
This is the second letter Trump has received from Special Counsel Smith notifying him that he is a target in a federal investigation. The first, sent in May, concerned Trump’s mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home. That investigation has already resulted in thirty-seven felony charges against the former president.
In his Tuesday morning post, Trump claimed the right to protest election results and questioned the legitimacy of the investigation.
“So now, Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, who I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), together with Joe Biden’s Department of Injustice, have effectively issued a third Indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden’s NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency. Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close,” Trump wrote.
Trump revealed news of the latest letter as he prepared for a Tuesday court appearance in the classified documents case. His attorneys will be asking for the trial to be postponed until after the 2024 election.
