Maybe the best really was yet to come: Kimberly Guilfoyle has landed the break-up gift of a lifetime, finding herself appointed Donald Trump’s ambassador to Greece the same day news broke of her split from his son Donald Jr.
“For many years, Kimberly has been a close friend and ally,” President-elect Trump wrote in a statement Tuesday evening. “Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States, and safeguard its interests abroad.”
“I am so proud of Kimberly,” echoed Don Jr. on X. “She loves America and she always has wanted to serve the country as an ambassador. She will be an amazing leader for America First.”
The announcement came mere hours after Page Six scooped that Guilfoyle and Don Jr. had called it quits. The pair had been engaged since 2020. DailyMail.com also reported Tuesday that Trump Jr. was now involved with Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson after he was papped holding hands with her.
“This is what level of julio-claudian we’re in right now: he’s exiled his son’s disgraced former mistress to an administrative position in Greece,” wrote one wag on X.
Perhaps Trump is dispatching Guilfoyle to Greece as part of a new strategy to keep MAGAworld hangers-on from cluttering up the Mar-a-Lago pool.
That would check with the rumors that also circulated Tuesday that President-elect Donald Trump was considering appointing Kari Lake as ambassador to Mexico.
Lake has been a close MAGA ally throughout her two campaigns, for the Arizona governorship and then US Senate. She’s tough on the border and is evidently convinced that both her 2022 election and Trump’s 2020 election were stolen. In her recent run for a Senate seat, however, Lake toned down much of her aggressive rhetoric, especially on abortion.
Trump endorsed Lake on both occasions. She lost twice, though only by a small margin in last month’s Senate race against Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego.
Lake has a background in journalism and communications and previously garnered attention as a Phoenix news anchor. While she has promised to champion Hispanic culture, she’s from Iowa and reportedly doesn’t speak Spanish well, which would have made her a strange choice for the Mexico role. Her husband is Colombian, which she uses to prop up her Hispanic sympathies. But it’s unclear how having a husband from Colombia would have helped Lake facilitate US relations with Mexico. Lake had been very critical of Mexico. “Fentanyl and meth, made with Chinese chemicals and produced in Mexican factories,” Lake’s website reads, “are destroying our cities, ruining our quality of life and leaving a vast trail of bodies in their wake.”
Sensibly, Trump ended up plumping for Ronald Johnson as ambassador to Mexico. “Congratulations Ron,” wrote Trump in a Truth Social post later on Tuesday evening. “Together, we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the illegal flow of Fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our Country and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!”
There are nonetheless plenty of ambassadorial appointments that could suit Lake more than Mexico. If distance is the objective, perhaps Madagascar or Mauritius might fit the bill…
