Madison Cawthorn will be leaving Congress, after he was beaten in Tuesday’s primary election by opponent Chuck Edwards. And perhaps no one will miss the North Carolina Republican more than Cockburn. To the in memoriam reel now: there was the time Cawthorn tried to sneak a gun past airport security, the time he accused his fellow Republicans of having orgies, the other time he tried to sneak a gun past airport security.
And, of course, there was that unseeable video, the one of Cawthorn lying in bed naked with another man. That picture was released by the Democratic PAC American Muckrakers, which also runs the subtly named FireMadison.com.
Now that American Muckrakers has gotten its wish, the group is reportedly turning its sights on another right-wing member of Congress. “I think we’re gonna go after Lauren Boebert in Colorado in a similar way,” David Wheeler, the group’s cofounder, recently told Business Insider. “I think we’re gonna engage in that race pretty quickly.”
Cockburn notes that Boebert is no stranger to controversy. She’s promised to carry a handgun into the Capitol and heckled Joe Biden during his State of the Union speech. Yet Wheeler insists there’s even more to come. He says the dirt on Boebert is “not as salacious as some of the Cawthorn stuff,” involving her finances rather than steamy pics. Business Insider points to an article from last year reporting that Boebert failed to disclose $1 million her husband had made through an energy company.
Cockburn will be the first to concede that a politician’s financial dealings are fair game. Yet he can’t help but think that American Muckrakers is off to a bad start here. What’s it called again when you release a public figure’s naked pictures without their permission? Slut shaming? Katie Hill is no longer in the House, yet the release of her nudes has become something of a call to arms on the left. To not apply the same standard to Cawthorn seems… let’s go with ableist.
At any rate, we’ll see what Wheeler is able to dig up on Boebert — and whether it has anything to do with her past as a badass gun-toting restauranteur. Cockburn leaves you with a 2019 interview of Boebert by The Spectator’s Teresa Mull at the Shooters Grill in (Cockburn loves this country) Rifle, Colorado:
