So much for the ‘uniter-in-chief’

President Joe Biden has shamelessly abandoned his chief campaign promise to unite the country. It became clear quickly into his presidency that this was a false promise as he railed against “extreme MAGA Republicans” and painted them a threat to democracy. The trend continued during Thursday night’s State of the Union address, as with each issue he brought up, he made sure to throw a jab at his “predecessor” and Republicans.

On a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that said an embryo is a human life for the purposes of families having recourse when embryos are destroyed by fertility clinics, he pointedly asked the GOP side of the aisle which “freedoms” they intend to take away next. He accused Republicans who don’t want to pass a supplemental Ukraine aid package of supporting Putin’s takeover of Europe — and former president Donald Trump of facilitating the deaths of Americans in the pandemic and destroying democracy on January 6. He also blamed the GOP for supporting his self-created border crisis by not voting through the Senate immigration bill.

On that point, Biden responded to Republican cries to “say her name” by actually naming Laken Riley, the Georgia nursing student killed by an illegal alien (although he may have said Lincoln) from the podium. This was not in the script. He asserted thousands of Americans are being killed by “illegals.” He then quickly squandered the goodwill by comparing her death to that of his son, Beau Biden, who passed from brain cancer, and then again blamed Republicans for alleged inaction on the issue.

It was one of the most nakedly partisan campaign rally speeches that belonged on the stump at a Democratic fundraiser and far away from the floor of the House of Representatives.
