A Georgetown University professor said in a Thursday tweet that “thoughtless” students protesting the school for reinstating its Covid mask mandate should “go fuck yourselves.”
Colva Weissenstein, the American Studies program manager, also claimed she “ripped into” those same students when she saw them protesting on campus.
“To the lady who stood next to me in front of Healy Hall while I ripped into @Georgetown’s self and thoughtless students protesting masks in buildings, in solidarity, thank you,” Weissenstein wrote. “And to the kids protesting the lightest possible imposition, go fuck yourselves.”
Weissenstein deleted her Twitter account after The Spectator reached out to both her and Georgetown University for comment. Neither responded to our request.
Georgetown announced last week that it would be reintroducing an indoor mask mandate on campus due to a recent rise in Covid cases, even though 98 percent of students and staff have received a vaccine and a booster shot. The campus mask mandate was originally lifted in mid-March, meaning students have been allowed to go maskless for just a few weeks over the past two school years.
In a campus-wide email, Georgetown admitted that most of the new cases were among undergraduate students, who are in one of the safest age brackets for Covid, and that none involved “severe illness.”
Nonetheless, Georgetown has some of the strictest enforcement measures in the country. Under the previous mandate, students were not allowed to pull their mask down to take a sip of water in the library or take off their mask while playing singles tennis. A student is currently facing suspension after he was reported to the administration for not having his mask on while eating a meal in the dining hall.
