Spare a thought for Allison Jaslow, the Iraq War veteran and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee director, who has undergone the sorry fate of having to resign on her birthday.
Jaslow stepped down as the Executive Director of the DCCC following an outbreak of what Cockburn can only describe as a fit of diversity-themed wokeness. As the group spiraled into crisis, its head, Rep. Cheri Bustos, took the unprecedented and highly serious decision to cut short her vacation.
According to Politico:
‘Jaslow’s sudden departure comes as Bustos tries to contain the fury from Democratic lawmakers and aides that she has done little to address the lack of diversity in the upper ranks of the campaign arm since winning the chairmanship late last year.
‘Two Hispanic lawmakers, Reps. Vicente González and Filemon Vela, called for Jaslow’s resignation in a statement to Politico on Sunday.
‘“The DCCC is now in complete chaos,” Gonzalez and Vela said in their statement. “The single most immediate action that Cheri Bustos can take to restore confidence in the organization and to promote diversity is to appoint a qualified person of color, of which there are many, as executive director at once. We find the silence of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on this issue to be deafening.”’
If Ms Jaslow has been forced from her post for the color of her skin, then surely this is a case for the American Civil Liberties Union.
In a statement to her team, Jaslow said:
‘Sometimes selfless service means having the courage to take a bow for the sake of the mission, especially when the stakes are so high.’
Spoken like a true soldier. Cockburn salutes her.
Jaslow was the first of several DCCC departures, as communications director Jared Smith, comms aide Melissa Miller, political director Molly Ritner, deputy executive director Nick Pancrazio and director of diversity Van Ornelas all followed her through the revolving door. Of those exits, only Ornelas is a person-of-color.
And once again, the malign influence of Big Tech is helping the American political machine by providing new and destructive ways to debase itself. Visitors to Jaslow’s Twitter profile who may want to read her resignation are greeted by animated balloons floating over their screen and a reminder that ‘today is her birthday!’ Yay!
Cockburn wishes Ms Jaslow a happy birthday nonetheless, and hastens to point out that the National Republican Congressional Committee is hiring and traditionally friendly to military veterans. They probably won’t judge her by her race either…
