Why Trump can’t escape the Epstein Files drama

The list is a bête noire of the right

President Trump remains baffled over the endlessly churning Epstein List controversy. “We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening,” he Truth Socialed Saturday. “We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.”

Calling Epstein “a guy who never dies” raised some eyebrows with the Alex Jones wing of the party. But for the non-conspiracy minded, the MAGA infighting over the Epstein List, whose release was a major Trump campaign promise, has us reaching for another bowl of popcorn.

Trump’s exasperation began to show at last week’s cabinet meeting, when a reporter asked him a question about the Epstein List. “Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy’s been talked about for years. You’re asking me… we have Texas, we have this, we have all of the things. And are people still talking about this guy? This creep? That is unbelievable… I can’t believe we’re asking a question about Epstein.”

But it was Trump who pulled even more attention to Epstein over the weekend. “Why are we giving publicity to Files written by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration, who conned the World with the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, 51 “Intelligence” Agents, “THE LAPTOP FROM HELL,” and more? They created the Epstein Files, just like they created the FAKE Hillary Clinton/Christopher Steele Dossier that they used on me, and now my so-called “friends” are playing right into their hands.”

Trump’s weekend post contained multitudes, including exhortations to let Attorney General Pam Bondi do her job of prosecuting Dangerous Thugs and Criminals. “SHE’S GREAT,” Trump exclaimed, like Tony the Tiger. FBI head Kash Patel shouldn’t be bothered with the Epstein Files either, Trump said, as he’s busy investigating ActBlue and “The Rigged And Stolen Election of 2020.”

But there’s a fundamental problem with this post from Trump. “Why didn’t these Radical Left Lunatics release the Epstein Files? If there was ANYTHING in there that could have hurt the MAGA Movement, why didn’t they use it?” Trump asks. Because even though they’re jumping on board now, sensing a chance to get at the President, the Epstein List isn’t a particular obsession of liberals, possibly because so many of their elite leaders could be implicated in its worst-case scenario. The list is a bête noire of the right, which for more than a decade has been screaming that a political party-less cabal of elite pedophile sex criminals runs the world.

During the campaign, Trump promised to expose the truth about this horrible ring once and for all. His sudden rants about Epstein don’t look like an insouciant dismissal. They look like he’s got something to hide. Trump’s name is on the list, Elon Musk said as a parting shot before his political exile from DC. Is it true? We’ll probably never know for sure.

“One year ago our Country was DEAD, now it’s the “HOTTEST” Country anywhere in the World. Let’s keep it that way, and not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about,” Trump also wrote over the weekend. But people do care about Jeffrey Epstein – especially his base – perhaps more than they should. This isn’t a fringe issue to them. It’s the main issue. And Trump’s exhortations aren’t going to get rid of their obsession. From their perspective, he’s just exposing rot in the drywall.

Attorney General Pam Bondi is showing no signs of stepping down. Trump repeatedly shows faith and support in his “gal.” FBI director Kash Patel tweeted over the weekend that “The conspiracy theories just aren’t true, never have been.” So there’s a chance that Trump might get away without too much damage.

At its core, the Epstein Files is an issue involving the global elite, and people on all points of the political spectrum have something to lose. Also, the Roy Cohn playbook of never admitting fault and reversing fire on your opponents hasn’t failed Trump yet.
